IADR/AADR News: Den Besten Receives
Pamela Den Besten, DDS, MS, Professor and Chair of the Division of Pediatric Dentistry at the UCSF School of Dentistry, received the International Association for Dental Research’s 2009 Pulp Biology and Regeneration Award at the IADR's 87th General Session & Exhibition in Miami, FL on April 1, 2009.
Dr. Den Besten was acknowledged as having made significant contributions to the understanding of the biology of dental tissue development and regeneration, with particular focus on the role of matrix molecules in cellular signaling and the effects of fluoride on odontogenesis.
Her recent studies on regeneration in the dentin-pulp complex have highlighted the roles of several bio-active molecules in regenerative events.
Dean Featherstone hailed the prestige of the Distinguished Scientist Award, recognzing decades of clinical, academic and research excellence at the UCSF School of Dentistry, with significant support from the National Institutes of Health.
"My primary research interest is in the mechanisms of tooth enamel formation" begins Dr. Den Besten's Professional birography. "My current focus is twofold. First, I am interested in determining the mechanism by which fluoride can alter biomineralization of tooth enamel. [...] A secondary and newly developing research interest are clinically related studies on the prevention and treatment of early childhood caries in children."
"My primary research interest is in the mechanisms of tooth enamel formation" begins Dr. Den Besten's Professional biography. She states, " Tooth related research has lead me into fascinating areas of study, including mechanisms of fluorosis, pulp regeneration and repair, the prevention and treatment of early childhood caries, and more recently to the use of stem cells in the generation of tooth tissues. We are now in exciting times as the possibility of regenerating teeth is closer than ever to becoming a reality."
